I thought since I hadn’t blogged in a while, and maybe have some new people visiting from Instagram, I’d say hello again, and fill you guys in on what I’ve been up to lately.
The one constant in my life is my three wild and crazy and adorable boys. (Four, if you count Luke. But he’s less crazy, more constant. Still adorable.) Jackson is 9 and my helper when it comes to Seeley. He loves school these days, except for reading. He is my creative one – he begs to watch youtube videos for how to draw superheros and ninjas and Lego characters. Derik is 8, and will help me wash the dishes now, so I’m going to keep him. He’s amazing at reading and Seeley thinks he’s hilarious. Seeley is both our wild and predictable man somehow. He’s got a temper that flares up at a moment’s notice, from perfectly serene to screeching in less than a second, and back again. He’s predictable in that we know exactly what sets him off…but he’s also turning into a sweet snuggle bug and a mostly-momma’s-boy. All three of them love music, and watching Star Wars and Lord of the Rings on a seemingly endless loop.
I’m homeschooling them and most days wondering how on earth my mom did it so amazingly. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but I know it will be one of the most rewarding. I found myself being drawn towards Charlotte Mason-type school…and also Classical…and also Unschooling…so we found a great program that is a decent mix of all three, and we study any subjects the boys are interested in more in-depth. I’ll maybe do a post on that if anyone’s interested!
As for me, I’ve been keeping busy with the aforementioned wild and crazy boys, and homeschooling them, and being interested in way too many things as always. I started oil painting this past year, which I love. I love learning a new medium just for fun. It’s humbling, since you don’t know what you’re doing, and you make a lot of mistakes. It’s frustrating when you make those mistakes. But the breakthroughs are incredible – when you learn how to manipulate the paint to go where you want, to learn what you like to paint, to learn what to leave behind when it doesn’t go as planned. I’ve focused a lot of 2016 doing figure studies to challenge myself on proportion and anatomy. For 2017, I want to focus on color theory!
I fell in love with yoga again this past year. I’ve done it on and off for six or seven years, but I practiced with more consistency towards the last few months of 2016 than ever before, and I’m working on moving towards a daily practice. Not only is it a good form of exercise, it’s the only one I truly enjoy, and it’s calming for me as well! I did 32 minutes this morning and burned 189 calories, according to my Apple Watch! Doing something I don’t hate! I’ve decided this is something I want to pursue more, and am working towards saving up to take teacher training in restorative and prenatal yoga. I’m excited to see where this takes me over the next few years!
Another commitment I’ve made this year it to my health. I decided I need to stick to the diet I should be eating (wheat and dairy free), and to help me kickstart it and hopefully feel even better, got convinced by a few friends to try Whole30 for the month of January. I’m a day in and haven’t died of hunger or deprivation yet. So far so good! I’m hoping to lose some weight this way (combined with yoga especially!) but honestly at this point I’d just like to feel better and to get healthier in my day to day life. I started taking vitamins and made it through most of the month of December without eating any wheat, so I guess you could say I’m an actual adult now. About time, at 29.
Finally, I worked hard on my shop and graphic design business in 2016, finally finding a place to get phone cases, mugs, and totes from, which was a huge goal of mine! This year, I want to add some new products so keep an eye out for that! (If you have anything you’ve been dying for me to sell, please let me know!) Notebooks are actually going to be one of the first new products I add – I’m so excited about it! I have a goal for myself this year to be more intentional about growing my business through various means (blogging is one of them!), and I’m curious to see if the things I’ll be trying will have a good return for me!
I’m excited to see what 2017 has in store for us! I hope y’all don’t mind my all-over-the-place blogging, because I can’t help it when I’m spread out all over the place with interests! I’d rather show you all how I’m exploring them all and attempting to master some of them, then try to keep this blog to a narrow topic and start a bunch of different blogs to cover everything but art and design. Hoping I can make it all make sense and not seem crazy random, but then again that’s my life!
